Overview

The Stack Overflow Visual Studio Code IDE integration is part of the OverflowAI add-on module. If you're ready to elevate and enhance your team's capabilities with OverflowAI, reach out to our sales team today.

The OverflowAI Visual Studio Code (VSC) extension puts the vast coding knowledge of Stack Overflow at your fingertips, right in your IDE. With this VSC extension, you can search the public Stack Overflow site (www.stackoverflow.com), your own Stack Overflow for Teams Enterprise (SOE) site, or both.

The OverflowAI Visual Studio Code extension can:

  • Create detailed, cited responses from user-generated content with the Search feature (learn more).

  • Explain, refactor, and analyze code with the Explain Code feature (learn more).

  • Explain code errors and suggest fixes with the Explain Error feature (learn more).

  • Turn your AI chat transcripts into new Stack Overflow for Teams articles with the Draft Article feature (learn more).

NOTE: To use the VS Code OverflowAI integration, your Stack Overflow site must have Unified Search enabled.

Download and install the extension

  1. Locate the Stack Overflow for Visual Studio Code Extension in the VSC marketplace, and click Install. The extension will appear with the Stack Overflow logo in your VSC left sidebar.

  2. Click the Stack Overflow logo in the sidebar to access the extension.

  3. Click Log in to Enterprise.

  4. In the text box that appears, enter the URL of your SOE site. The extension will redirect you to a login page in your default web browser.

  5. Enter your SOE credentials.

  6. If prompted to approve the application, click Approve. This will complete the login process and redirect you back to VSC.

  7. To verify that the VSC extension can connect to your SOE site, select My Team under the extension's chat box. Enter a question relevant to your SOE site into the chat box. If the search doesn't return an error message, you've successfully completed the installation and configuration of the extension.

  4. Sign back in by clicking the Stack Overflow logo in the sidebar to access the extension.

  5. Click Log in to Enterprise.
